DRDO conducts successful maiden flight-test of ‘Kusha’ Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the maiden flight‑test of the ‘Kusha’ long‑range surface‑to‑air missile on 23 July 2026 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha. The missile intercepted an electronic target that simulated a high‑speed, high‑altitude aerial threat. According to the release, the system can neutralise fighter jets, missiles, UAVs and large enemy aircraft across a wide range and altitude envelope, with all components—including missiles, radars and the command‑and‑control centre—developed by DRDO laboratories and industry partners. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the test as a milestone that reduces import dependence and boosts India’s air‑defence capability, while Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh monitored the launch and congratulated the team.
