PARLIAMENT QUESTION: WEATHER FORECASTING AND EARLY WARNINGS

The Ministry of Earth Sciences answered a Rajya Sabha question on the status of Mission Mausam, launched on 14 January 2025 to make India ‘weather‑ready and climate‑smart’. The mission aims to upgrade weather‑surveillance technologies, expand high‑resolution atmospheric observations, deploy next‑generation radars (C‑Band, X‑Band, S‑Band) and satellites, and strengthen high‑performance computing (Arunika at NCMRWF and Arka at IIT‑M). Under the mission, the India Meteorological Department now operates 50 Doppler Weather Radars nationwide, with additional radars being added in Maharashtra. New forecasting systems such as the 6 km New Bharat Forecasting System and impact‑based, district‑level warnings have improved forecast accuracy by about 40 %. Citizen‑centric platforms like Mausamgram, KALP, and the Panchayat Mausam Seva Portal provide hyper‑local forecasts and agrometeorological advisories, while real‑time alerts are shared with disaster‑management agencies.
