PARLIAMENT QUESTION: BHARAT FORECAST SYSTEM
The Bharat Forecast System (BharatFS) uses a newly implemented Triangular Cubic Octahedral (TCo) dynamical grid to operate at a 6 km horizontal resolution, surpassing the earlier GFS T1534 (~12 km) and typical global models (9–14 km). Real‑time prediction is enabled by the MoES supercomputing facilities Arka (IITM‑Pune) and Arunika (NCMRWF‑Noida). The system generates forecasts every 6 km, allowing localized predictions for clusters of panchayats/villages, aiding farmers in crop planning and water authorities in reservoir management, and improving extreme rainfall prediction over the core monsoon region. Developed indigenously by Indian institutions, it aligns with strategic, economic and “Make in India” objectives and enhances regional leadership in meteorological services.
