PARLIAMENT QUESTION: Earthquake Risk in Kangra-Chamba-Dharamsala Belt

The Ministry of Earth Sciences’ National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported 16 earthquakes in the Kangra‑Chamba region during June 2026, comprising 12 events of magnitude 2.0‑2.9, three of 3.0‑3.9 and one of 5.0‑5.9. The area lies in Seismic Zone V, the highest hazard zone, and scientific studies indicate potential for earthquakes above magnitude 7.0. NCS monitors 172 seismic stations nationwide, with seven located in Himachal Pradesh. The NDMA, together with state governments, conducts preparedness activities such as mock drills, training, and public awareness. The government also promotes earthquake‑resistant construction through the National Building Code, BIS codes and model bylaws, and supports seismic micro‑zonation studies and financial assistance to states.
