PROGRESS OF SAGARMALA PROGRAMME, PORT MODERNISATION AND MULTIMODAL CONNECTIVITY

The Sagarmala programme, a central sector scheme of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, aims to promote port‑led development. The Ministry provides financial assistance for projects under five pillars – port modernisation, connectivity, port‑led industrialisation, coastal community development and coastal shipping & inland water transport. State‑wise data show 79 projects completed (₹5,374.5 cr) and 54 projects under implementation (₹4,538.2 cr). Budgetary allocation and utilisation from 2022‑23 to 2025‑26 total ₹1,699 cr allocated and ₹1,534 cr utilised. Port capacity has risen to 1,728.4 mt for major ports and 1,090.53 mt for non‑major ports, with average turnaround time improving to 47.25 hrs at major ports. The Ministry, in coordination with Railways and Road Transport, has identified 294 rail‑road connectivity projects, of which 84 are completed. Green initiatives such as ‘HaritSagar’ guidelines, the Green Tug Transition Programme and renewable‑energy adoption are also highlighted.
