India Becomes a Party to the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies by Depositing its Instrument of Acceptance

On 20 July 2026 India deposited its Instrument of Acceptance for the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS), becoming the 123rd WTO Member to join the pact. The Agreement, adopted in June 2022 and effective from 15 September 2025, targets subsidies linked to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and over‑exploited stocks, aiming to protect marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of traditional and small‑scale fishers. Aquaculture and inland fisheries are excluded from its scope. The government highlighted that the move reinforces India’s commitment to sustainable fisheries, enhances its credibility as a responsible seafood exporter, and aligns with existing domestic frameworks such as the EEZ Rules 2025 and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
