The Government of India is implementing the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme, jointly by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, to enhance safety, dignity and social security for sanitation workers. The scheme promotes mechanised cleaning, skill development, health insurance (including Ayushman Bharat), PPE distribution and financial assistance for self‑employment. To date, 89,915 sewer and septic‑tank workers and 2,81,117 waste pickers have been validated; 87,037 PPE kits and 1,84,118 PPE kits have been supplied respectively, and health cards issued to 76,845 and 1,04,729 workers. Additionally, 753 Emergency Response Sanitation Units have been equipped with modern safety devices.
