Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Announces India’s First Engineering Biology Graduation Course to Build Future Biotechnology Workforce

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced the launch of India’s first Engineering Biology graduation course, positioning it as a foundational discipline for the next phase of the country’s bioeconomy. The roadmap, titled “Building India as a Leading Bioeconomy Powerhouse by 2035,” outlines a strategy to expand the bioeconomy from about USD 95 billion today to nearly USD 300 billion by 2030 and to USD 700 billion by 2035, supported by a proposed ₹50,000 crore Bioeconomy Growth Fund. The Minister highlighted the sector’s growth from USD 10 billion in 2014, the presence of over 11,000 biotech start‑ups, and the need for sovereign talent, industry partnerships, AI‑enabled research, and synthetic biology to drive healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing.
