India's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train Set to Redefine Sustainable Rail Mobility with Capacity of Around 2,600 Passengers

Indian Railways will flag off the country’s first hydrogen fuel‑cell trainset – a 10‑coach passenger train with a capacity of about 2,600 passengers. The train generates electricity onboard by reacting hydrogen with oxygen, emitting only water vapour. It can run at an operational speed of 75 km/h (design speed 110 km/h) on the 89 km Jind–Sonipat section. A dedicated hydrogen production, storage (≈3,000 kg), compression and dispensing facility at Jind supports the train, and the system incorporates multi‑layer safety devices and has been certified by TÜV SÜD and PESO. The trainset, developed indigenously by RDSO, Medha Servo Drives and ICF, showcases India’s push for sustainable mobility and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
