Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster to come up in Porbandar, Gujarat

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has given in‑principle approval under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme for two projects: a Greenfield shipbuilding cluster on 2,000 acres at Kuchhadi in Porbandar, Gujarat, and a ₹1,570‑crore ship‑repair facility at Vadinar in the Gulf of Kutch. The Porbandar cluster, developed through the National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park‑Gujarat SPV, will have an annual production capacity of 1.2‑1.5 million gross tonnage, aiming to boost domestic shipbuilding of large commercial vessels. The Vadinar facility, a joint venture of Cochin Shipyard Ltd. and Deendayal Port Authority, will include a 650‑metre jetty, floating dry docks and workshops, enabling repair of vessels up to 300 metres and reducing reliance on overseas yards. Both projects are positioned to enhance India’s maritime competitiveness, create employment and support the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
