Cabinet approves Semicon 2.0 - Government delivers on its commitment for a long-term policy support to Semiconductors in India

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Semicon 2.0 programme with a budget of Rs 1,27,500 crore to expand India’s semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem. The initiative builds on Semicon 1.0 and focuses on six pillars: (1) deepening chip‑design capabilities, (2) incentivising machines and materials manufacturers, (3) setting up additional fabs (first fab slated for 2028), (4) strengthening ATMP/OSAT units, (5) advancing R&D to move beyond the 28‑110 nm node, and (6) enhancing talent development (315 universities, ~68,000 students trained). The programme aims to boost economic growth, improve national‑security‑related supply‑chain resilience, and establish technological leadership. Semicon 1.0 has already approved 12 manufacturing units (investment >Rs 1.64 Lakh crore) and 24 design projects, with 105 start‑ups accessing EDA tools.
