India Strengthens Global Leadership in Food Standards at 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49)

India secured several milestones at the 49th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) in Geneva (6‑10 July 2026). Seven Codex standards and guidelines developed under India’s chairmanship or co‑chairmanship were adopted, including standards for dried coriander seeds, fresh curry leaves, vanilla, large cardamom, water reuse in food production, control of Campylobacter and Salmonella in chicken meat, and labelling of pre‑packaged foods. The Commission also approved India’s proposal to develop a Codex standard for cashew kernels, and elected India as Co‑Chair of the Electronic Working Group on New Food Sources and Production Systems. These outcomes aim to facilitate trade, ensure food safety, and strengthen market access for Indian exporters.
